Video – Physicians: Green Cards through PERM/NIW
Immigration Attorney Carl Shusterman (Former INS Attorney 1976-82) explains how International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and Canadian physicians can obtain permanent residence in the US through family-based immigration, the green lottery, investment and a variety of other means.
Most IMGs who are not married to US citizens are sponsored by their employers. They get their green cards through the PERM process. However, if the physicians works in a medically-underserved area for 5 years, they can qualify for a green card through a National Interest Waiver (NIW). The employer can submit the NIW petition for the IMG or the physician can self-sponsor.
Our law firm has assisted over 3,000 IMGs and Canadian physicians in obtaining J waivers and green cards. Further information is available on our PERM Resources page and our National Interest Waivers for Physicians page. Our law firm won the landmark lawsuit, Schneider v. Chertoff which easied the process of obtaining green cards through national interest waivers for physicians.
