Article Six of the Constitution provides that "The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."
We always thought this is what democracy was all about.
That was until 2007 when a Republican Congressman from Virginia named Virgil Goode mailed a letter to his constituents about the first Muslim representative elected to Congress, and warning that we need to overhaul U.S. immigration laws before Muslims constitute a majority in Congress!
We have news for Congressman Goode. The sole Muslim Congressman who he is so alarmed about is not an immigrant, but a native-born American who can trace his lineage back to the 18th century.
Further, twice as many Buddhists were elected to the 110th Congress as Muslims. Should we start worrying about Buddhists, Congressman Goode? How about Hindus and Sikhs?
Below are the three photographs of the Buddhist and Muslim members of the 110th Congress. Identify each by name and state, and of course, identify the immigrant!
